Solomon
Islands may not be the elusive source of ancient King Solomon's gold as
wished by Spanish explorer Alvaro de Mendana, but what this vast group of
almost 1,000 islands lacks in bullion, it makes up in a spectacular array
of earthly and cultural treasures. It boasts the world's largest raised
atoll in Rennell Island for example. At the Solomons' southernmost tip,
Rennell's unique flora and fauna earned it a page in the UNESCO's World
Heritage List, one of only three that scooped the honours in our part of
the globe. Solomon Islands also boasts the world's largest double barrier
lagoon in Marovo and the world's second largest atoll in Ontong Java. Solomon Islands is not only a country of breathtaking natural beauty, it comprises people who practise a variety of exotic cultures. It truly is the Pacific's melting pot, where descendants of Oceania's three main cultural groups of Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia merge and co-habit as one nation, proud of their rich and unique cultural identity. If the
terra firma scenery is spectacular, then the view sub-aqua is dazzling.
That is why divers voted it one of the top three best dive destinations
in the world. This island nation of 460,000 people is only too happy to
share all these with you. They simply call it home and travel writers
call it paradise. |
